Sri Vasudeva

Sri Vasudeva is an extraordinary spiritual teacher and leader with an amazing life story to share with all who desire a better life and a better world, a story of total self transformation in consciousness.

His passion for service to humanity led to his moving away from a prestigious position in the secular world to freely offer his gifts through his books, recordings, workshops and a very powerful nonprofit organization he founded called Blue Star. Having mastered both the spiritual and material worlds (in that order) he is able to blend both in a very unique way that is important for our times .

Sri Vasudeva cuts to the heart of spirituality when he speaks of the subtle forces that impact our lives. He demystifies the mysterious Kundalini power underlying all of it, a universal Divine Energy that he, like the wise ones of ancient times, discovered, became one with and expresses in fullness. His simple, direct and useful teachings reveal how spiritual energy inspires every possible field of human endeavor. Over the years he has had a profound impact on many people around the world who have discovered, through living the teachings (which are already within us), how to naturally experience Divine Energy for themselves. The gifts of awakened Kundalini benefit not only the individual but the community in which they live and in this way Sri Vasudeva feels confident that we can co-create a better world.

Search for a Spiritual Master

Sri Vasudeva is fourth generation East Indian (although now he prefers to think of himself as a citizen of the world) born Ramcharan Bisoondial August 14th, 1954 on the tiny island of Trinidad in the West Indies. He wanted to become a professor when he grew up and had saved money for his university education but when he realized the limitations of academic education for true human transformation he became disenchanted and desired instead wisdom, that which could teach us how to be truly civilized. He had three burning desires: to become the master of his own mind; to live in the fullness of love and happiness in every moment; and to answer the question, “Who am I?”

He turned to many sages for the answers and was deeply inspired by the lives and works of Swami Vivekananda, Sri Ramakrishna, Paramahansa Yogananda and Ramana Maharishi. He couldn’t imagine living in this world without the full understanding (experience) of Self and self-mastery he desired. Then he read these powerful words:

“In studying books we are sometimes deluded into thinking that thereby we are being spiritually helped; but if we analyze the effect of the study of books on ourselves, we shall find that at the utmost it is only our intellect that derives profit from such studies, and not our inner spirit. This inadequacy of books to quicken spiritual growth is the reason why, although almost every one of us can speak most wonderfully on spiritual matters, when it comes to action and the living of a truly spiritual life, we find ourselves so awfully deficient. To quicken the spirit, the impulse must come from another soul.

The person from whose soul such impulse comes is called the Guru — the teacher; and the person to whose soul the impulse is conveyed is called the Shishya — the student. To convey such an impulse to any soul, in the first place, the soul from which it proceeds must possess the power of transmitting it, as it were, to another; and in the second place, the soul to which it is transmitted must be fit to receive it. The seed must be a living seed, and the field must be ready ploughed; and when both these conditions are fulfilled, a wonderful growth of genuine religion takes place.”   (Swami Vivekananda)

Greatly inspired to attain an actual experience, he at once cashed in his university tuition for a ticket to India and so in 1975, at the tender age of twenty-one, went in search of a spiritual master who could awaken him. After travelling through India and visiting various Ashrams he came to the Shree Gurudev Ashram of Swami Muktananda in Ganeshpuri, Maharashtra. The Swami was not there but his devotees were able to maintain such a powerful field of subtle (invisible/spiritual) energy that Sri Vasudeva experienced a dramatic awakening of the Kundalini energy.

Over a four month period, this Kundalini Energy traveled up his spine opening the heart (anahata), throat (vishuddha) and brow (ajna) spiritual centers (chakras) – a rapturous succession of awakenings which brought him many wonderful gifts. This transformation process arose spontaneously and naturally due to a combination of the high energy field and his receptivity to it. This experience put him so much in touch with his inner Self or Guru that his cup of joy was overflowing and he was so much in gratitude to the outer Guru for creating that space that enabled his awakening. At that stage the outer Guru (the physical presence of Swami Muktananda) was not missed.

During those four months in India he learned all he could about the ancient science of Yoga whilst the awakened Kundalini guided him from within. After four months his money was used up and he returned home to Trinidad overjoyed to have the tools he needed to maintain this high state. These tools were spiritual practices from traditions such as Maha Yoga, Sahaja Yoga, Siddha Yoga and the Yoga of Energy or Kundalini. Swami Muktananda and his predecessor Baba Nityananda became his greatest inspirations. Sri Vasudeva persisted with his spiritual practice whilst skillfully integrating it with worldly living – a practice which is now a mainstay of his teachings.

In 1977, when he took an opportunity to return to India to meet Swami Muktananda in person, he realized that the Guru was not a man but a Principle, one which acted through people and situations, although there were some highly evolved individuals in which this Principle always manifested in fullness. After completing more spiritual training at the Ashram, in his parting meeting with Swami Muktananda he requested a new name and the Swami blessed him with the name “Vasudeva.” About eight months later he would experience the fullness of his name.

Inner Transformation and Service to the World

Almost three years after his trip to India, Sri Vasudeva’s sincere and persistent efforts at last bore fruit. On March 25th, 1978 the Kundalini Energy suddenly took over, plunging him into a period of intense yogic experiences which left him, on May 5th – forty miraculous days later, in a state of complete peace, love and inner freedom. The Energy had pierced his crown centre (sahasrara chakra). This was a complete rebirth leaving him in a state of profound inner change and a state of connection with that source of power inside that he carries to this day and can feel in every moment. It is a state where he knows he is neither the physical body nor the mind but their master. His spiritual centers (chakras) now operate at full capacity. It is a permanent, irreversible, rapturous state of unconditional love, selflessness and fearlessness which is grounded in ordinary human reality. He is able to generate great positive energy through the instruments of the spiritual centers (chakras) which he freely shares with the world. He also feels plugged into a source of infinite power or as an instrument of a Greater Power which carries him in every moment. This awareness has put him into a place of service. He feels he is a master of himself but a servant to the world.

After such a profound inner change – a feeling that anything was possible now, that he could make anything happen and he wanted to test that. He had only one desire left which was to share this gift with others and to participate in co-creating a world of peace, love and harmony. He now sought to master the secular world as a testimony to the power of Spirit in normal life; to really ground himself into normal life so he could completely understand it and master it so no one could say he lived in the clouds. Therefore, having completed his spiritual education, Sri Vasudeva went back into the secular world from a space of fully enlightened consciousness, to put into practice the wisdom of working with the mind and vision whilst grounded in physical reality. He completed his academic studies in Engineering and worked for several years as a Teacher, Engineer and Manager, applying spiritual principles to all aspects of his life. Throughout these years the connection to the source of his power was never broken, a connection which supported all his efforts. By mastering his inner world first, he was able to master the secular world almost effortlessly.

Whilst working full time and developing his professional skills, together with a very small group of inspired individuals he started up an Ashram project which would eventually be registered as a non profit organization in 1993 with the official name Blue Star Yoga Ashram. He did not pick the name Blue Star but it was divinely channeled to his mother and he accepted it, learning only much later that it may be connected to a Hopi Prophecy foretelling of an Age of Enlightenment in which knowledge of the Kundalini Energy would become revealed.

In 1993, having mastered the secular world, Sri Vasudeva gave up his prestigious career to dedicate himself fulltime to holistic human development and community service through the vehicle of the Blue Star. Since those early days, the mission of the Blue Star has expanded into unprecedented directions beyond the mandate of a spiritual Ashram and is now a global phenomenon. Although Sri Vasudeva is its spiritual leader, he sees the same potential within every human being, in that his possibilities are ours as well because his story is everyone’s story. In his words:

“What I have discovered is also your truth and your reality. If only you could discover it, we could have a better world.”

This is also a motto of Blue Star: “Transform yourself, transform your world.”

Blue Star Teachings

Sri Vasudeva’s life is a living testimony to the ancient sciences of Kundalini and Yoga; his teachings are rooted in it and his goal is to bring ancient wisdom into modern thinking in a practical and purposeful way for the betterment of our world.

Sri Vasudeva feels that Kundalini is the basis for all spiritual experiences and that spirituality is the essence of everything and is not limited to the domain of religion. The spiritual centers (chakras) are invisible parts of our energy anatomy that affect every aspect of life. Without knowing about them and consciously working to develop them it is like handing powerful tools to a child, which is the consciousness state of most of humanity. He feels that ignorance of our inner reality greatly contributes to the suffering and strife in our world and that an enlightened society would do a great deal to eradicate these evils….and that we would all be happier, healthier and wiser if we act in the human experience from a space of enlightened consciousness.

His teachings are like those of Jesus Christ, Buddha…individuals who did not start religions themselves but who passed on great truths validated by their own experience of the world.

He has been traveling around the world since 1996 giving powerful workshops, counseling , and coaching those who are interested in self transformation. Many of these workshops can be seen online through YouTube, LiveStream and on the websites of Blue Star Centers (see below). In addition he has produced several books, audio and audio-video material which are available here.
